The Queen

We must salute the entire senior class of Bolivar High School this morning for something they helped accomplish last Friday.

Kara Marcum is a down syndrome student there at the high school who loves sparkly shoes. Her smile has a way of just lighting up the hallways and it was her attitude that helped her get elected to the homecoming court, where she was hoping to trade her sparkly shoes in for a tiara and reign as Homecoming Queen.

Her escort Friday night was Caleb McKinney, who is just one of Kara’s admirers

So by now most of us have gotten ours and OUCH!  The paycheck.

I think most of us are beginning to feel the pinch from Washington's decision to embrace austerity measures aimed at bringing down the nation's budget deficit.

Paychecks across the country have shrunk over the last week due to higher federal tax rates, and workers are already cutting back on spending, which will drag on the economy this year.

Many analysts said that the 2% hit would be about $30.00.  But mine was nearly $60.00

To an outsider's eye, the issue of domestic violence can be black and white: Just leave. For those left physically and emotionally black and blue, that zero-tolerance perspective isn't as clear, creating a disconnect between the abused and those who care for them.

A 2010 CDC survey found that more than one in three women and more than one in four men had experienced violence by an intimate partner.)

Dear Ashley and Brad,

Over the weekend I got an interesting wedding invitation from my cousin that really surprised me.

My cousin's invite politely informed my husband and I that we are not invited to be part of her big day!

Keep in mind I heard about the wedding from other family members and I already expected to attend, I even started shopping for a dress.

Can someone explain this invite to me and why she sent it. I would have rather not gotten an invite than feel rejected by a family member.

Is this the new trend among young people?

CONTROL THE PHONE

It's never easy deciding whether Junior is ready for a cellphone, and Verizon Wireless hopes to make the transition easier with FamilyBase, a new service shown at CES 2013 this week in Vegas that’s coming this spring.

Using a special app loaded on both the parents’ and child’s handsets, Mom and Dad can monitor everything from calls and texts to even what apps the child is using. Or they can give their kid a digital timeout.

This story was a shocker and I never even imagined something like this could happen, but Velma Kellen lived it!  Velma is 73 years old with 3 dogs and other than that, she lives alone... or at least she THOUGHT she did!

This time of year in Washington where she lives, the average temperature is about 34 degrees and Velma had a NEW furnace... but she wasn’t keeping warm. So she called the repairman.

On the Road Again

Some of you saw this yesterday and wondered, "what in the world is THAT!?"  Especially if you were on the road between Asheville Hiway and Middlebrook Pike!

It’s big (really big!), weighing 200 tons and it’s called a Cyclotron!

The big ole piece of medical equipment left Forks of the River industrial park around 9 am yesterday morning and ended up at the medical complex over at Dowell Springs Business park.
