Must Have App

This is a sad statistic....On average, 25 soldiers were lost to suicide every month in 2010.  In the 5 years from 2005 to 2009, more than 1,100 members of the Armed Forces took their own lives, an average of 1 suicide every 36 hours.

Here in the state of Tennessee alone.....  we will lose    of our brave men and women to suicide... these are our sons, daughters, fathers, brothers, sisters, mothers....who have served on our behalf...who have faced the horrors and emotional toll of that we did not have too.

But better news came yesterday when State officials announced a new suicide prevention smartphone app for soldiers.

Gov. Bill Haslam and Maj. Gen. Terry "Max" Haston, the state adjutant general, announced the "Guard Your Buddy" app.

According to a news release from the Tennessee National Guard, it is the first app of its kind in the country.

The app will provide anytime, anywhere access to life resources, on-demand counseling and on-call suicide prevention.

"We hope soldiers will download this smart phone application and pass it on to their fellow troops to ensure they have someone to talk to in times of trouble," Gen. Haston said. "It is difficult to predict if or when a member of our guard family will face suicidal thoughts, but we want them to be able to get help if they need it."

The "Guard Your Buddy" program provides immediate access to counselors to assist in whatever problem the caller is facing.
