Special Needs Boy
Do you have any hang-outs? You know, places where you go and the folks there seem to know you... That’s how it was for the Castillo family (Kim, Milo and the rest of the family), who dine a lot at Laurenzo’s Prime Rib in Houston. They were there last Wednesday and everyone was stopping by to say “hello.” The chef, the waiter and waitresses, the manager, it’s a feel good time because little 5 year old Milo who has down syndrome.
Well, Milo was telling the folks about his last birthday, which was recent, and how he is learning NEW words! He was saying “HI” and that had the staff just cooing and giggling with Milo.
But that’s when one table of customers wasn’t quite as happy about Milo; so they got up and moved to the back of the restaurant. Their waiter, Michael Garcia, thought, "oh okay..." So Michaels shifted a few things around and was getting ready to take their order when he heard the man in the group say, “Special needs children need to be special somewhere else.”
OOOOOhhhh... and that hurt Michael...
"My personal feelings just took over,” said Garcia, a waiter at Laurenzo’s Prime Rib in Houston, told KTRK. “And I told this man, 'I'm sorry, I can't serve you.'"
Garcia said, "It upset me because he's a 5-year-old little boy. He's an angel. He's precious!"
The waiter flat out refused to serve the man and his family. A few minutes later, they walked out, stealing glances back at the Castillo table.
The restaurant might have lost a few customers that day, but the waiter is still being hailed for his bravado.
