As the summer vacation season approaches, there’s a lot of planning, packing and excitement. But be aware! You never know when you could be taken advantage of, or even worse robbed.
On a return flight from Punta Gorda, Florida to McGhee Tyson Airport recently, I met a woman from Limestone, Tennessee, (who wishes to remain anonymous,) seated beside me.
The 62 year old mother of one daughter, has a son-in-law and one grandchild who is one year old.
This sweet passenger and I stirred up a lot of fun conversation. Then she told me. She was robbed.
And, since many of us will be headed out of town for a little get away, I thought it would be of good use to share this.
The woman says she was killing some time shopping while her husband did some work. The Tennessean says she was in a department store when a man asked her which candle smelled better. As he distracted her, she believes someone working with him, reached into her purse that was in the buggy and grabbed her wallet. They got away with $60 in cash and quickly used her cards to take out more than $5,000 from her bank accounts within minutes.
A police report was filed and they are waiting on getting security cam video. However, her recommendations include: Always zip or close your purse, don’t leave it in the buggy, don’t put all of your money and all of your bank cards in your purse when on vacation. That way, if someone does get your bag while on vacation, the thieves only get away with very little and it will be faster for you to make calls and cancel cards.
Safe travels!
