TDOT is asking for the public’s help in naming four new snowplows, one for each region of the state. Some submissions for Region Four, which includes Memphis, include local weather-related puns like “Snowmane” and “Beale Sleet.”
A TDOT spokesperson reports about 400 names have already been submitted just days after the competition began.
TDOT spokesperson Nichole Lawrence said the Name a Snowplow campaign is aimed at raising awareness for the agency’s winter safety efforts.
“We’re not just out building roads and patching potholes,” she said. “We’re also out there during wintertime, trying to make sure the roads are safe for everyone to get from point A to point B.”
Lawrence said one of the four named plows will join West Tennessee’s more than 150 existing snowplows, Memphis Public Works’ 14 salt trucks and 12 snowplow attachments the next time winter weather as severe as last year’s hits the Mid-South.
“I’m sure all the kids loved it, but of course driving on it is not the fun part,” Kapone said. “We need them to Whoop that Slick or Hustle and Snow it up off the ground so we can get around town!”
Residents can submit a snowplow name here until November 30. After that, TDOT will filter for eligible suggestions before voting begins in December.
