Look, I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not winning any green thumb competition. I feel clueless a lot of times about what to plant and where and when.
That’s why I REALLY count on those who DO know to give me a clue. Apparently, if you want a yard or garden that stays pretty for most of the year, you need long-blooming shrubs? Ok, I’ll bite. Whatcha’ got?
Hydrangeas: These can give three or more months of flowering, meaning the color will be there all summer long. As long as they get at least four to six hours of sunlight a day, they’ll thrive.
Rose of Sharon: This is a popular hibiscus series that’ll give your garden a tropical touch. The individual blooms will only last a day or so, but they produce flowers all summer long. These shrubs are drought and heat tolerant and prefer a location that’s full sun.
Landscape roses: These roses will continuously bloom all summer long and they’re hardy and disease-resistant. Some varieties are used as ground covers, privacy hedges or border plantings.
Weigela: If you have bare spots in your garden that you want to fill with color, this is the shrub for you. Some varieties do stop blooming after early summer passes, but there are many, including the Sonic Bloom, that will continue to rebloom all the way into the fall
Salvia “Hot Lips”: Also known as Baby Sage, these shrubs have two-toned red and white flowers. They can even bloom all the way until the first frost! They’re pollinator-friendly, drought tolerant, and do give off an aroma.
