Before you make a last-minute run to Spirit Halloween and fight the crowds for whatever’s left, take a look in your own closet. You might be surprised at how many costume possibilities are already hanging in there. With a few basic clothing items, some accessories and a little creativity, you can pull together a fun costume without spending a dime.
Here are seven easy ideas to get you started:
- The Sweatset Throwback
Got a colorful tracksuit and a matching headband? You’re halfway to being a Cheetah Girl! Or go full early-2000s celebrity style with oversized sunglasses, chunky jewelry and a tiny purse. Extra points if you still have some questionable fashion choices from that era!
- The Robe
A robe can do double duty! Add shorts and a sports bra to create a boxer costume. Wrap your hands for the full effect. Or, if you happen to have a pair of wings lying around, turn that robe into a Victoria’s Secret angel look.
- The Leather Jacket
Pull out your leather jacket, put on an all-black outfit and add tiny sunglasses. Congratulations, you’re now a character from The Matrix. Or channel Sandy’s big transformation in Grease with tight black pants, a black off-the-shoulder top, curly hair and red heels.
- The Turtleneck
A black turtleneck paired with jeans or a simple skirt gives you that classic Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy look. Have an orange turtleneck? Even better! Add a red skirt, knee-high socks, loafers and glasses, and you’re Velma from Scooby-Doo.
- The Plaid Skirt
A plaid skirt is surprisingly versatile. Pair it with a school-style top for a Gossip Girl or Gilmore Girls look. Or add a striped blazer, chunky shoes and long dark braids to become Wednesday Addams.
- The White Button-Down Shirt
This one has options! Throw on a white button-down, socks and sunglasses (and skip the pants) for Joel from Risky Business. Or channel Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s with statement earrings and a sleep mask.
- The Little Black Dress
Every closet has that one black dress, right? Add cat ears and use eyeliner to draw on a nose and whiskers. Easy black cat! Or grab a pointy witch hat and some boots, and you’ve got yourself a classic Halloween witch.
You don’t need an expensive costume or a whole lot of planning to have some Halloween fun. Shop your closet, get creative and see what you can come up with. After all, sometimes the best costumes are the ones you throw together at the last minute!
